The strength of traditional tarot symbols combine with diverse bodies, up to the minute fashion, and the strength and power of twenty first century witchcraft, where we make our own magic. The 78 cards of the tarot deck are rich with meaning, archetypes like The Magician, The Empress, and The Chariot reflect our lived experience and are a mirror into the ways in which we interact with the world. Acclaimed artist Lisa Sterle takes these symbols into contemporary life with vibrant art that celebrates the diversity, excitement, and energy of the new kind of magic that is happening in this world. The Modern Witch Tarot Deck is the answer to your questions about the past, the present, and whatever the future may hold, and its empowering messages will help you take the next step toward whatever you desire.
This deck that I am sharing really hit home for me. I wasn’t sure what to expect from this deck originally because when I first saw it I thought it was cheap looking, like there wasn’t much effort put into it. I try not to judge, but I did every time I saw this item in front of me. I saw this deck in every bookstore I went to, while browsing online, and even in one of the otherworldly stores in San Francisco I frequent for ritual incense. The deck would just stare at me like, why aren’t you listening to the calling you unconsciously feel?
I finally picked up the deck, and I had been going through a very rough time since December 2025, leading up to February 2026. When I was going through each card, like I normally do when I get a new tarot or oracle deck, I was observing all the details. I started to see myself within the cards, especially with the queer themes and the diverse array of POC, which is very important to me personally and something I feel can reach out to others too.
The moment I came across Lisa Sterle’s approach to the Ten of Swords, something within me struck a chord and made my heart skip a beat. The image within the card is so suited for today’s modern age of social media. I put the card down and discovered there was a bonus card, a lighter version of the Ten of Swords that is interchangeable with the original. I did just that, swapping the interpretations out.
I did a reading for myself, a 4-card spread, and I was kind of confused with what I was looking at because it was all about choice with what was happening in my life. My last card was Justice, which is about balance and still choice. So I pulled a fifth card to tie everything together for advice or the final outcome, and it was the Ten of Swords. I started crying.
When you react a certain way with a tool, especially something you didn’t even give the time of day before, it says a lot about the internal struggle and resistance of accepting a change that has shook you to the core. The readings were accurate, and I have been reaching for this deck for a full month in between readings with other decks.
I can’t recommend this purposeful deck enough, especially since the creator said the first card she made was the Ten of Swords, and it was on a day she wasn’t doing well. I felt like she connected with me indirectly.
